I colori della campagna del sud della Francia in estate, dominano questo dipinto: il caldo giallo-oro del grano e il verde azzurro della luce scintillante. Il dipinto mostra la piana di La Crau, fuori Arles, con in lontananza la catena montuosa delle Alpilles. Per il piano, Van Gogh utilizza tocchi di vernice in varie direzioni, mentre per lo sfondo ha applicato macchie di colore più uniformi, creando profondità supplementare. Egli considerava questa imponente vista una delle sue opere più belle.
