Ritratto della figlia del padrone di casa dell'artista a Southend, dove Brown soggiornò nel 1846. Era appena tornato dall'Europa. A Basilea aveva ammirato i ritratti di Holbein e a Roma, ha studiato il Rinascimento Italiano e i pittori nazareni tedeschi. Questa esperienza si riflette nella posa frontale, anche la modellazione di ombre e di luce è chiara della figura. Brown ha dipinto la bambina con notevole naturalezza e immediatezza.
