Tra gli espressionisti tedeschi, gli artisti che hanno utilizzato colori forti e forme esagerate per esprimere contenuti emotivi, Franz Marc era l'unico a mostrare interesse empatico nella vita degli animali. A partire dal 1905, si dedicò a rappresentare il mondo con una visione fresca e purificante. Marc dipinse "Bewitched Mill" a seguito di un soggiorno nella città italiana di Merano nel Tirolo meridionale. L'opera esprime la vita dell'uomo rappresentata dalle case e il mulino sulla sinistra e la natura, incarnata negli alberi e negli animali sulla destra.
