L'immagine raffigura la morte di Icaro dalla mitologia greca. È circondato da ninfe di mare che si disperano. Suo padre, l'artigiano Dedalus, gli creo' ali di cera in modo che entrambi potessero fuggire dall'isola di Creta. Ma sopraffatto dalla superbia, Icaro vola troppo vicino al sole, la cera si scioglie e muore. Questa è la più famosa immagine di Herbert Draper.
